Without further ado… The OFFICIAL 2024 Orlando Magic Fan Survey:
1) Which era of basketball in Orlando first made you a Magic fan?
A0: Shaq & Penny
A1: Heart and Hustle Era
A2: The Jonathan Isaac takeover
A3: Dwight era
A4: T Mac
A5: T MAC!
A6: Went to my first games during the Penny & Shaq era when I was 2-3 years old but it was the T Mac days when I really started to pay attention.
A7: The T Mac era
A8: Been a magic fan all my life but first remember being a fan in the 90s Shaq & Penny era
A9: Shaq & Penny / T Mac (cause my dad watched every game and it made me a fan even though I was a toddler)
A10: End of TMAC, beginning of Dwight
A11: I’ve been a fan since I can remember. Growing up with a dad that played, and having the Magic be the main professional sports team made it easy. First memories were of Penny (post Shaq). Ronnie Seikaly was my first favorite player (Hurt my soul when I watched the 30 for 30 and saw he was our “Shaq replacement”)
A12: Heart and Hustle era with Tracy McGrady. Tmac is also my goat.
A13: 94-95 season the Penny Shaq Beatles season
A14: Late 00s/Dwight era. Got into it through highlights on Norwegian TV and gradually grew my fandom from there.
A15: The T-Mac era is what really made me a Magic fan. My family had introduced me to the Magic in the 90s but I fell in love with the team in the T-Mac era. I was old enough at that point to understand the game better, and I was mesmerized by how good Tracy McGrady was. I’ve watched every game since that time.
A16: I was pretty much born into liking the Magic. Born in 1991, born and raised in Orlando, we were always a basketball family. My second oldest sister was really into the Magic. And me being the only boy of the family, guess she molded me into a fan. But my very first games I can actually remember going to was the 1999-2000 season and Corey Maggette was my favorite player at the time.
A17: I became a Magic fan around the start of the TMac Grant Hill era. I was 8 years old back in 2000 and i remember a family friend who was a huge fan of Darrell Armstrong was able to get tickets to the game where the Magic played the Bulls. We went and that was the first time i got to not only see the Magic for the first time, but also see Tracy McGrady live as well. We won that game thanks to TMac, Darrell Armstrong and i think Pat Garrity if i remember right. I been locked in on the Magic ever since.
A18: I started watching basketball thanks to my cousins around 2009 in the mist of the playoffs and fell in love with the Magic especially during that Cavs series. One thing I knew coming out of the 2009 post season was I hated Lebron, loved Kobe, and wanted nothing more than to see the Magic back in the finals competing for more rings!
A19: My Magic fandom started very early. There are photos of me as a toddler running around in a far too big for me Shaq jersey, but I think the conscious fandom really began during the T-Mac era. I vividly remember going to games at the then-TD Waterhouse.
Afterwards, the 2009 team that went to the Finals really amplified the fandom as a middle schooler at the time.
A20: The Dwight Howard Era with Dwight, Rashard, Hedo and Jameer made me a die hard Magic fan. Growing up in SoCal and watching them beat the Lakers in 2008 was so impressive. Then watching them make it all the way to the finals that year had me hooked ever since.
A21: Shaq and Penny. I was a little kid and I grew up watching them on TV. Their personalities made me fans of them and I adopted the Magic as a team and stuck with them even after they left.
A22: I’ve been a fan since I was in First Grade (circa 2001). My parents took me to see Tracy McGrady play and instantly fell in love with the blue and white. Later in high school, Dwight, Hedo and Rashard forever ingrained my loyalty to the team and I’ll never switch up
A23: The 07-08 season and the Dwight era just kinda starting
A24: It’s hard to say because I truly was born into being a Magic fan. My mom was pregnant with me and attended a game against the Bulls during our first finals run. Tracy McGrady was the first play I remember I loved to watch.
A25: I became a Magic fan around 93 or 94. Seeing Shaq & Penny on TV with the cool original uniforms made me a fan for life.
A26: Tracy Mcgrady era. We loved T Mac so much we named our childhood dog Tracy! The Stan Van Gundy era will always be my favorite though.
A27: I started following the NBA (and basketball in general) in 2015 and have supported the Magic from the beginning. When I was a kid, my dad bought me a mini hoop and it was from the Magic, so it wasn't hard to pick them! Magic's games here in Italy are mostly at night, so it was hard, but I managed to watch all the games to feel as close as possible to the team and the American fan base.
A28: ‘92, ‘93, ‘94, Shaq & Penny, Nick Anderson, Dennis Scott, Anthony Bowie (My high school coach!), Donald Royal, Scott Skiles, Horace Grant. That playoff run was just the most fun thing in Orlando, it was everywhere, there was paint on every single van, it felt like there was Magic swag all over the place, the FAN-ATTIC off I4, going to the arena in those games felt like they were on fire, those crowds were incredible. I was a Magic fan ever since I can remember.
A29: I first fell in love with the Magic and basketball in general during the early Dwight Howard era. I loved the four out, one in style and Orlando had shooters galore. Jameer Nelson, Hedo Turkoglu, Mickael Pietrus, Rashard Lewis, Rafer Alston, Anthony Johnson, Keith Bogans, and Pat Garrity were a fun group to surround such a dominant interior presence. I also modeled my own game after Turk and he’s my favorite player of all time.
A30: I would say the Dwight era but me being a Orlando Magic fan is really a family thing since my grandfather and two of my aunts lived here and were always telling me about the team and took me to games when I was younger. I finally moved out here like I always wanted to about 3 years ago and have gone to countless game since Franz and Jalen arrived.
A31: Darrel Armstrong and TMac years
A32: 2000's. When my dad moved to Orlando in 94', peak Penny & Shaq yrs, he became a fan instantly. So when I started to gain interest in watching basketball, my dad's team was the 1st I would try and take interest in. They had a guy named T-Mac... I became a fan instantly
A33: Born into Shaq & Penny, grew up on T Mac taking over the city. Shaq was bigger than life, while you couldn’t move around in ‘03 without seeing the 3 stripes blue and white T Mac adidas shoes.
A34: The Penny and Shaq era made me a Magic fan. I was vary young and didn’t go to many games of that era, but they made the impact, which made it easy for me to really fall in love with the franchise when I moved to Orlando in 1999.
A35: probably the original Shaq and Penny playoff runs, although I was very small and only dimly aware of what was happening. I don't think I started paying close attention to basketball until shortly after Shaq left.
A36: I was a fan from the beginning, and really started paying attention the 2nd season.
Guy who recently became a father and hasn’t watched a game in years: Heart and hustle Darrell Armstrong and Bo outlaw teams
2) What does this season mean to you as a fan?
A0: Hope. The future is bright
A1: It means everything
A2: Its the hope that kills you
A3: It feels like we finally have some reason (with quantitative results/evidence) to believe this organization can get back to competing and playing at the highest level. It has been a long run of bad, mediocrity, and then bad again since Dwight left so definitely means a lot to be playing meaningful basketball again and feeling like it’s just the start
A4: It’s brought back my enjoyment and excitement for being a magic fan, haven’t help this optimistic about the future of the franchise in a long time
A5: Excitement! Hopeful for the future of our franchise.
A6: This season has brought back a sense of pride in being a Magic fan, and we haven’t had that in 10-12 years.
A7: It’s made me so happy to finally see this team playing well with a bright future ahead. The team plays hard and loves each other
A8: This season has provided a sense of hope that the franchise hasn't had in over a decade
A9: This season was hella fun and the future is bright
A10: That some thing in the front office is working
A11: It gives me optimism, which I haven’t had in a long time. We have a core that can compete in today’s era of basketball that has the upside to continue to grow into a contender.
A12: Means a lot, being a fan for 20+ years and seeing the highest of highs to this last decade plus of just basketball, it feels so good to have a real future and see success.
A13: This season is very special it’s the first real year of relevance. Lots of magic merchandise in the stores the chatter about the magic finally has returned to barbershops and basketball courts
A14: I think you only really get one of these types of seasons we’re currently having until expectations and nerves start, so personally it’s been a fantastic season for me as a fan. I’m 25 now so it’s by far the best Magic team of my adult life anyways, so I guess it has some meaning to me in that sense as well.
A15: This is a really meaningful season. Since Dwight left, we’ve endured a lot of losing and a lot of unsureness as fans. Many players and groups have come and gone. We’ve now reached a point where things have been much more stable the last few years, and this season the team made a major jump with mostly the same team from years past. Achieving a playoff berth to stamp the season is a major accomplishment, and it’s so important for this young team to taste that kind of success this early. We’ve seen what losing for too long can do to a team psyche in past rebuilds. I think this season will bode well for this team’s confidence moving forward.
A16: This season means a lot to me as a fan. The spark the city has had the last 2 seasons since getting Paolo. Because of how mature these young players have been. It’s been a minute since we had a team who left it all on the court! And me being in my 30s I can finally sit back as the old head and be proud haha
A17: This season was special. Going through those early 2000s seasons with TMac, the late 2000s to early 2010s with Dwight Howard taking the franchise to the mountaintop only to plunge into the abyss known as the Dwightmare, the Rob Hennigan era which was the start of a very long decade of sadness, to the day we hired Jeff Weltman and John Hammond. Looking back on everything that happened, to see where the Orlando Magic are at today, after experiencing a season we’ve not had since 2010….It just brings a tear to your eye as a longtime fan of the franchise.
A18: As a fan for 15 years now I’ve seen it all, the highest of highs and lowest of lows but this season made me truly believe that everything we had to go through as fans and a organization led us to this moment. We’re miles ahead of where we should be and this team is going to be around for a long time thanks to everyone being one big fam from top to bottom!
A19: Considering this is the best season record-wise since I was a junior in high school, this season has really meant a lot. There was so much uncertainty after the Dwightmare, and despite a few teams that rose to the ceiling of mediocrity in 2019 and 2020, that uncertainty remained for over a decade. I remember genuine excitement for every single lottery pick in that era, just to watch them not become the superstar we all craved. I attended the 2021 draft in Brooklyn, and that night really felt like the tides were turning for the team. To see those picks, along with Paolo in 2022, be so influential on the success of this season has meant the world. This is easily my favorite Orlando Magic team in a very long time, possibly ever.
A20: Since Dwight got traded I felt like their was no true direction or hope for this team. Even with Vucevic, Evan and AG teams felt like .500 and 2nd rd was the ceiling. This is the first time since 2012 I have such high hopes and feel like we can be a contender in a few years.
A21: This season to me has officially ushered us into the next successful era of Magic basketball. It's awesome to watch games and know they have a legitimate chance to win every night.
A22: This season means that the Orlando culture is here. The success this team has made this season and can potentially make in the future is a testament to the new culture on the team. I can root for my city’s team pridefully and without question from other fandoms. I’ve been repping Orlando Magic on my chest even after Dwight left, and during this time Miami fans have been clowning and questioning my loyalty, but this season’s culture proves my loyalty was worth the wait.
A23: It means a lot, only our second winning season since 2012. Been through two different rebuild so things are definitely going great here
A24: This season has shown the value in our front office’s philosophy. They never tried to accelerate the rebuild with big FA signings or trades for big time players. We have shown patience and a dedication to an organic rebuild and it’s starting to pay off.
A25: This season has been truly special because of the amount of losing seasons I've seen over for the past decade. I am happy to see the players & coaching staff reap the benefits from their dedication & hard work. Our fanbase have witnessed multiple rebuilds. Glad this rebuild is up & running well. Can't wait to see this team play in the playoffs.
A26: What does this season mean to you as a fan? Everything! Such a fun group of guys with so much potential. We have hope again.
A27: It feels like we are starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. This team makes me proud to be a Magic fan. The energy of the team is contagious.
A28: It’s nice to actually enjoy watching the team, to enjoy knowing there’s a sense of hope for the future, knowing there’s a sense of competence in the front office, knowing we have a coach we can invest and believe in who seems to have a good hold on the team, Jamahl’s a relatively new head coach but how long has he been around the game? We haven’t felt like this since 2010? ‘11? …it’s a relief to be relevant on the national scale, to actually like watching the basketball games, to actually believe there’s a future with this team, and having a reason to invest your time knowing there’s something we can build on, how there’s players I can like now and they may still be here in 2-3-4-5 years, and obviously, what’s the ceiling on Paolo, what kind of superstar do we have?
A29: This season shows that ownership finally got it right with President of Basketball Operations Jeff Weltman. He made the playoffs with the roster he was given when he was hired and then made the decision to fully rebuild. It didn’t take him long as the team is just starting its contention in this league.
A30: Since the beginning of the season It has had a special feeling celebrating 35 years of the franchise and all its players from all its different while witnessing the beginning of the Franz and Paolo era.
A31: This season marks the return of quality Orlando Magic basketball. As well as great foreshadowing to the next decade in the Eastern conference
A32: It means satisfaction and enjoyment. I no longer have to hear "yea but the Magic suck" etc from family & friends. This team exceeded my expectations and I finally have belief that consistent losing is behind them.
A33: The winning culture around defense, exciting fast break slams and threes off forced turnovers, and modern spacing schemes finally feels tenable
A34: This current season, means foundation and standards. Having gone through over a decade of low success and low team ceilings, gaining stability in team foundation and standards is a great reset for the fans.
A35: honestly, it's just been refreshing to see/enjoy games with actual stakes for the first time in ages. The Clifford-coached Vučević/Gordon/Fournier teams played meaningful basketball too, of course, but that team was a bit older than this current group is and had limited upside. It never felt, in other words, like it could be the start of something special and sustainable. So really it's just refreshing. I'm happy this group made it this far and am excited for the future.
A36: I'm most glad that all the negativity that comes with losing and injuries is being put behind us, and that we can stay in the moment with so many possibilities in front of us.
Guy who recently became a father and hasn’t watched a game in years: didn’t watch but it’s cool
3) Describe this team in 1 word or phrase.
A0: Young. Hungry. Tough.
A1: Got that Dawg in us
A2: Young
A3: Unselfish
A4: A bunch of dudes who give a shit
A5: Sky is the limit
A6: Together
A7: Electric
A8: Resilient
A9: Exciting
A10: Hopeful
A11: Hungry
A12: Team*
A13: Rejuvenating
A14: Other teams spend years finding the player the Magic have two of
A15: Hungry.
A16: Magical!!!!!!
A17: Magical.
A18: Believers
A19: Completely bought-in
A20: Together
A21: Grit and Grind
A22: Usurper**
A23: Passionate
A24: Growing
A25: Gritty.
A26: Special.
A27: Cohesion
A28: Joyful***
A29: The Grind
A30: Together
A31: Potential
A32: Pure Magic lol
A33: Effort
A34: Fun
A35: Hard-nosed****
A36: Effing easy to root for.
*A12: they really embody what a team is, not sure I’ve seen anything like it tbh. 1-15 are all friends and seem like they love one another, it’s been so fun to watch the growth.
**A22: because we’re too young to be here, the media does not want us here, but we comin for the throne
***A28: I genuinely believe that all of these guys really really really like each other, like playing with each other, don’t feel too much of a competition to be ‘top dogs’ on the team. It seems like Jamahl, Management, the team has done a good job of getting these guys to accept their roles; I could see these guys being in the league for a while. There’s just a sense of joy like all of these players are feeling this for the first time, except for Joe Ingles.
****A35: This group plays with an edge, and i think that phrase captures it. Sadly, it doesn't convey the youth and speed of the team, but hey, it does the job overall.
Guy who recently became a father and hasn’t watched a game in years: Fraudulent
4) What does it feel like watching this team’s style of play, “The Magic Standard”, compared to watching the team before?
A0: This team hustles.
A1: It’s cool to see our guys play hard and play together. Especially with how young we are. Way more exciting than Fournier Vooch handoff game
A2: They play like they belong
A3: Feels great to see a team play for each other and push towards a common goal. Gives you a bit of that college feel in the way that nobody cares who gets the credit and winning is the main priority. When that doesn’t happen, it’s refreshing to see players genially upset because they want to win that bad.
A4: It’s fun to see a bunch of young guys who have bought in and take pride in playing super hard and playing defense
A5: It’s fun watching a young group of guys buy into the team mentality. Mosley has done a great job in developing a culture of hustle and heart.
A6: It feels like we are a real basketball team! And that players are finally being developed to one day reach their full potential.
A7: They play hard-nosed and gritty defense unlike any magic team I’ve ever watched
A8: Proud that they've embraced a commitment to playing defense, to improving, and to each other
A9: Always play hard on both ends. The effort is there every night even if shots aren’t falling
A10: Feels like we have evolved to a modern style of basketball, even if there is still a lot of work to do
A11: It’s fun to watch, but it makes me nervous at the same time. I LOVE the competitive nature the team has in every game I watch. The aggressive nature creates havoc for the opposing team and you can see it throw them off. It makes me nervous when we play well-structured offensive teams, because they can use it to their advantage and create easy chances for them. Watching this version of the Magic is fun though, because we are physically imposing across the board, and we can compete in multiple styles of play.
A12: Feels like there’s finally an identity and it’s awesome that it seems like there’s more levels for it to get to.
A13: Tho we desperately STILL need shooting and Paolo needs to be lil more efficient, it’s so awesome having two legit stars to build around.
A14: I think it’s ironic how we spent nearly a decade after the Dwight years without a single player that can generate a good shot at the rim consistently, and now we have several of them after just a couple of years of rebuilding. Way prefer this brand of basketball over what those post-Dwight years gave us. Not to mention the defense.
A15: The Magic Standard of defense first, getting out in transition, and playing hard every night is a lot of fun to watch as a fan. You know every night this team is going to swing on their opponent no matter who it is. We’re not going to get punked, and if you’re not careful you will get ran over by these young dudes.
A16: I love it. Because any given night its a different player who can take off. You can expect Paolo, Franz to get theirs but you never know who’s that XFactor. It’s different every game. Which is an advantage against opposing teams. It used to be stale previous years. And I feel like that’s all thanks to Coach Mose coming aboard and implementing “By Committee” mindset.
A17: It feels like the team that this franchise has been trying to build since the Aaron Gordon draft. Uber athletic, defensive monster that thrives on causing turnovers and running fastbreaks all day long. Sure, we have plenty of nights this season where the team slogs through games when the shots aren’t falling, but we’ve also had plenty of games where they looked like world beaters too
A18: It feels like a glimpse into the future of the league, true showtime on both ends of the court.
A19: It feels great to watch everybody on the team give a damn. To tie in with the above, the entire team 1-15 has bought in to "The Magic Standard." It makes the highs and lows of the season more enjoyable and more tolerable, respectively.
A20: Just the passion, locking down on defense and playing for each other has been a joy to watch. Everyone cares for each other and wants best for the team. Having a top 3 defense with such a young roster is insane. I feel like we have finally found an identity with our size, physicality and defense.
A21: Honestly, I wish the team was a bit more organized offensively but when you watch other teams around the league the effort and defense of the Magic really pop out.
A22: Compared to previous seasons, we never played to the Magic standard. From the outside looking in, it seemed like previous Magic teams always tried to match the standard of other teams. Today’s Magic team understands that our standard is THE STANDARD. Nothing less. Intensity, aggression and passion have all increased because of this.
A23: I love that we typically always have 5 guys on the floor that all play elite defense. Definitely a breathe of fresh air.
A24: A great change of pace. Before this year, it felt like we were unable to dictate games and impose our will on the opponent. Now with our defense and our ability in transition, teams hate being matched up with us. They know buckets will be hard to come by and if you are slow to defend it, we will be you on the break.
A25: This organization finally has an identity. Props to Coach Mosley for leading the charge. The players have bought into the defensive end & seeing them get after it at a high level is really fun. The Magic Standard is now in place to strive for many seasons to come. I felt the organization was trying to do the same with Coach Clifford. Unfortunately, it was short lived because injuries & lack of roster flexibility. I still have much respect to the 2018-2019 squad.
A26: Refreshing. It was a rough decade.
A27: The team's energy and involvement make you feel like an integral part of the team, something that had been somewhat lost in recent years. All the players (even those who play less) convey happiness in playing basketball together, and this togetherness is one of the things I've been waiting for for a long time
A28: Before Weltman and Mosley, we were just meandering in nonsense, like bringing Clifford back, Vogel, Skiles. Irrevelance and no execution, no plan, no forethought. We had Aaron Gordon in the bubble looking good, but then that all went to hell when J.I. got hurt. If the Heart and Hustle era is The Magic Standard, then this is the closest thing to some of that heart and hustle. I kinda feel like we’re 2000s Pistons-esque, but we have a superstar, with our defensive identity, and these guy are just gonna get better, and the fact that they really enjoy playing with each other, maybe that can end up being greater than the sum of their parts.
A29: Orlando’s current roster can be frustrating to watch at times because of the lack of offensive firepower, but “The Magic Standard” has everything to do with their defense. This team relies on creating stops for easy transition baskets. They take more pride on defense as a collective than any Magic team in the last two decades. Coach Mose has this group bought-in and they have largely been effective because of their hustle and energy.
A30: Its been incredible to watch our players develop and set a new standard of winning since the start of the season.
A31: Love the standard of great culture, chemistry and defense
A32: Having an identity is key to be a successful team. Defense and Hustle leads to tons of fast breaks, which leads to highlight plays like the Suggs alley to Cole
A33: A breath of fresh air, it’s the most exciting style of play this team has ever had, a watchable product and incredible jump from the pace of teams prior
A34: Its been enjoyable watching the players development happen in a meaningful and not tanking for a lottory pick, while making the post season.
A35: I do enjoy "The Magic Standard," as I understand the term: hard-nosed, physical defense that comes to play every night. It suits the personnel, both in terms of skill set and personality. I mean, yeah, it might be nice to watch a team that could regularly drop 130 points and rifle in threes--the Magic's long stay in the league's offensive basement is at 12 years and counting--but I'll take anything that makes them competitive on a regular basis. Plus, defense is more reliable/less subject to variance than offense, so at least there's a baseline. Overall I'm pleased with it, but certainly there's room for improvement.
A36: I enjoy the cohesiveness and the fight, but also that the entire team and coaching staff seems to be improving over time.
Guy who recently became a father and hasn’t watched a game in years:: n/a didn’t watch
5) Who’s your favorite player to root for on this roster?
A0: Jalen Suggs
A1: Jalen Suggs
A2: Jonathan Isaac
A3: Jalen Suggs, partly because of what was said above. Really easy to root for a guy that plays for the team and wants to win. Also know how hard he works and great seeing that work pay off (exemplified by his shooting improvement)
A4: Cole Anthony, go heels
A5: Got to be Paolo Banchero! Jalen Suggs also needs a mention
A6: Joe Ingles
A7: Jalen Suggs
A8: Paolo Banchero
A9: It’s hard to pick a favorite cause everyone is awesome: Paolo Banchero though
A10: Paolo Banchero
A11: I’ve got 2. Love watching Paolo, bc you can see he has taken a great step towards becoming potentially a top 5 person in the NBA. You can tell when watching that he has that mindset that he is the best person on the court and wants to show the competition. Second is Jalen Suggs. He is so competitive on both sides and has grown from someone we weren’t sure of in his rookie year into a core piece on both sides of the ball. (Also, was at a game in Chicago in 2022 and he hit a game winning 3 that silenced the entire crowd. LOVED it)
A12: Markelle Fultz is my favorite on the team even though he’s struggled tremendously this year but Paolo Banchero of course is my favorite to watch, just an all around game for 21 year old is so crazy to watch.
A13: Fav player is easily Paolo Banchero for his upside holds the key to our true trajectory if he’s a superstar we’re a dynasty
A14: Franz Wagner. Paolo Banchero is no doubt going to be the team’s best player in the future, but right now it’s Franz Wagner.
A15: I root for so many guys, there’s so many underdog stories. Markelle Fultz and Jonathan Isaac’s comeback from injury, Paolo Banchero being overlooked as a #1 pick with historical rookie and sophomore seasons, Jalen Suggs emergence after a rough start to his career, Anthony Black being a completely under the radar rookie. I think I’ll go with Jonathan Isaac though, he’s had it the worst while also having the most major comeback. He’s become so important to this team, hard not to root for him.
A16: Jonathan Isaac for sure! If it wasn’t for injuries, he would’ve been a multiple time All Star by now.
A17: Can i say Paolo Banchero & Franz Wagner? if not then Paolo Banchero.
A18: Jonathan Isaac, he has a special place in my heart and I’ve always said “when healthy, JI is the X-Factor for this team”
A19: It might be cliche, but I'd have to say Paolo Banchero. I remember being dumbfounded that there was no talk pre-draft of the Magic selecting him. It was clear that he was the archetypal forward that could score and pass that the team, and many others, so desperately craved. Rooting for him individually feels like reward for suffering through all the past missed lottery picks, and it feels incredible.
A20: Jalen Suggs no matter what he will give you whatever he has on both ends. Doesn't matter what is the score or how much time is left. He will do whatever he has to do to win.
A21: Jalen Suggs
A22: I root for everyone, I love everyone. My fiancé’s favorite player is Chuma Okeke! But to answer your question, my absolute favorite player to root for is Cole Anthony (Jonathan Isaac a close second for similar reason). Mainly because they were here at the end of the Vuc era and have understand what the losing culture felt like. Cole knows what we’ve been through. Cole’s attitude, passion and energy kept the loyalty flame alive during sad Magic years. He sacrificed so much for this team by moving to the 6th man role and He is the X-Factor (T-Ross human torch type) off the bench that will be a game changer for us in the Playoffs.
A23: Jalen Suggs
A24: Paolo Banchero. He is everything. We will go as far as he takes us.
A25: Jalen Suggs. His offensively growth this season has been fun to watch.
A26: Paolo Banchero because he’s destined to be our superstar that will put us over the top. Isaac/Franz/Suggs/Cole honorable mention
A27: Jonathan Isaac
A28: It’s definitely Jalen Suggs, but you can make the case for a lot more. Jalen, he’s just everywhere, he loves guarding the hardest assignments, he’s just constantly playing as hard as he can, it looks like he cares… Once a game he just has a “holy shit” moment. I love rooting for Mo Wagner, I think he’s underappreciated. His hands are incredible, he just gets in there and fights; I feel like there are games where he ends up stabilizing us, or is just a stabilizing force. Paolo had so many moments this year in the clutch where he came up short either on a game-winner or last possession, and every single time he genuinely looked distraught, like it really hurt him. Just the other day he had a game-winner and I think he’s making strides in that respect. Paolo looks like LeBron on the drive, nice midrange game, defensively good luck trying to take him. Markelle Fultz comeback story. Cole Anthony probably should be starting somewhere, I just love his game. J.I. (Jonathan Isaac) just locking people down. Joe Ingles being OG. Wendell being solid out there. Franz , how many different euro-steps can he do? So many guys to root for, but the answer is Jalen Suggs.
A29:. Jonathan Isaac. The comeback story is impossible to not appreciate every time he checks in.
A30: Jonathan Isaac
A31: Hard to choose between Franz and Paolo
A32: Suggs....easily. He plays with such a joy and cares so much. Especially for this city
A33: This year? Suggs. In general? Paolo. Wendell brings consistency too.
A34: For me it was always going to be Paolo. He was the player that actually gave this team a chance to get to a level that past eras would never be able to reach. If he hit, then the team could hit!
A35: I know he's come under fire from Magic fans this year, but there's just something about Markelle Fultz that captivates me. He has such an unusual handle, and he reads the floor in an unorthodox way. Sometimes he fires passes from the baseline or free-throw line extended, where teams just aren't guarding him at all, and it leads to a wide-open layup that no one sees coming. And stuff likes that make me appreciate how he's able to weaponize the weird geometry afforded him by opposing defenses. Plus he seems like a great guy and a quiet leader. I respect that.
A36: I think it's Jalen Suggs. I loved watching his friendships with Paige Bueckers and Chet Holmgren leading up to him being picked by the Magic, and really love that he lets us see his heart and fight and emotion come through his athletic gifts. I pray constantly for him to stay healthy because he gives so much. Close 2nd is probably Cole - the outright personality of the team, and the dude my 7 year old son and 11 year old daughter and even my wife connect with the most. Such a character.
Guy who recently became a father and hasn’t watched a game in years: Paolo Banchero cause he’s a stud but honorary mention Markelle Fultz because of the redemption story
6) How far do you think this team can go in the playoffs?
A0: All the way
A1: Homer pick - FINALS. Real pick - 2nd round
A2: East conference semis
A3: I don’t see us getting past Boston but will be great to get some playoff experience against Cleveland and I’d give us a 50/50 shot in that one
A4: Winning a round would be incredible
A5: No one can stop us. NO ONE…
for at least the first round, then maybe getting a game or two against Boston would be cool
A6: Realistically I think we can win the first round and steal a game against Boston in round 2. I’d just be happy to have a close series in round 1.
A7: I think we can win a few games off the Celtics but eventually fall in round 2
A8: Second round
A9: First round win, Second round loss
A10: Second round
A11: Could see them winning 1st round. Anything beyond that feels like a reach this year.
A12: I think second round is achievable. Unfortunately i think that’s the farthest we go but I’ll be acting like we should be competing for a chip by mid way first quarter of game 1 against the Cavs lol
A13: I think we win our first round this year
A14: I think a first round win is possible, especially considering the Cavs’ downward in the last month plus of the season. We do have flaws that are very exploitable though, which the Cavs especially have exploited in the past, so I don’t envision it to be easy or anything. Relies quite a bit on our guards shooting the ball well. The Celtics will out-talent us in a potential Eastern Conference semi-final.
A15: I’m super biased when it comes to a question of “how far can the team go” even in this playoffs. I think we can take anybody. Realistically speaking, if we take the Cavs to 6 games I’d say that’s good for this team. Deep down though I think we have enough to beat them. We can surprise everyone. This is gonna sound crazy, but I think we have the personnel to seriously challenge Boston. We’ve seen this team have big performances in the regular season. I mean heck, we went 2-0 against Denver. To me, the competitive fan in me, playoff time, there is no losing in mind. We can win it all. Very unrealistic sure, but being realistic is boring. Let’s go!
A16: Honestly feel like the East is wide open. The sky is the limit with this team so if we can take it one game at a time, you never know we could see us win multiple series
A17: I think we can make it to the second round.
A18: This team currently can make a run for the eastern conference finals. Cavs and Celtics are great matchups for us and if healthy we can make a scary deep run…all comes down to one word “BELIEVE”
A19: The way the East shook out, I think there's a chance they get to round 2 and maybe take a game or two off of Boston. Whatever happens, I'm very grateful that the team gets to have this experience, and even more grateful that I haven't watched my last Magic basketball game of the season just yet.
A20: I feel like it will come down to if we can make our open threes or not. Cavs will be sending doubles to Paolo and Franz, packing the paint and playing Zone. If we can make our open threes and lock down on defense. Wouldn't surprise me if we are facing the Celtics in the 2nd rd.
A21: Second round. The matchup with Boston is unfortunate. If Boston got knocked out in a first round upset they could make the finals (if a Healthy Bucks team isn't around).
A22: Defensively we can make it to the Eastern conference finals. Offensively our limitations is the first round. As such I will say we can meet in the middle and make it to round 2 pushing the game to a 7 game series.
A23: First or second rd exit
A24: I like to think I’m a rational fan. I understand the history of youth and inexperience in the playoffs. That being said, I think we can win this series against the Cavs. After that, who knows?
A25: Selfishly, I want them to win the championship since they are in the playoffs. Realistically, 2nd round of the playoffs. Beat the Cavs
A26: This year? ECF why not. In 2025-2030? to the moon!
A27: Second round at best
A28: I think it’s kinda wild how the Magic have been written off as this like ‘cute story’ by the national media. You get the sense the goal posts are moving: “they have a competent team”, “maybe make the play-in”, “maybe make the playoffs”, “almost the 2-seed”. So I just want to enjoy the now, enjoy the ride, enjoy that we’re an actual basketball team not dealing with sub-500 crap... I think we ended the season the last 30-35 games like Top-6 in the NBA… I think we’re gonna come out hot and smoke this Cleveland team… All the pressure’s on Boston, they’re supposedly the greatest team of all-time… So we have no pressure, something could go wrong… Realistically we’re probably not going to win, but we got a team that’s going to defend the hell out of the Celtics… So, a couple things turn the Magic’s way, and it’s a series. Go Magic
A29: I think they can win this series. I would give them a 40% shot to beat Cleveland which are decent odds. There is zero chance they can beat Boston in the next round.
A30: Game 6 of the eastern conference semi finals
A31: ECF
A32: Unfortunately, we fell into the less appealing bracket imo, I think they can make it to 2nd rd. Other side of the bracket would've been Conference Finals
A33: Finals. Orlando can beat any team in the East, they will beat up Cleveland on the boards in a rock fight and outlast Boston in a series where Orlando sneakily and surprisingly matches up well with length and strength and mobility at every position, but the bright lights and experience of the Denver Nuggets will ultimately be too much for this young Magic team on the biggest stage.
A34: I do think its possible for the team to make it to the second round but it will be a challange. Offensively a LOT of things have to go right that often did not in the regular season. The young players need to also be able to handle the moment since they have never experienced it before.
A35: I think this team CAN win a playoff series. I don't know about anything beyond that. Their defense has carried them pretty far, but the margins get so narrow in the postseason that they need big offensive improvement to get to the next level. Part of that is internal, as Franz Wagner rediscovers his outside shooting stroke, Paolo Banchero gets more efficient and gets to higher-value spots on the floor, and Jalen Suggs continues to refine his off-the-dribble verve. But they need an infusion of shooting from somewhere, be it the draft, free agency, or trade. And until they address that, I don't think they can win more than one series.
A36: I think this team's ceiling is probably taking a 2nd round opponent to 6 games. And that would be incredibly worthy of praise. Even taking their opening round matchup to 6 would be lovely... but damn I'd love to advance 😤
Guy who recently became a father and hasn’t watched a game in years: Cavs in 7, hopefully I’m wrong

I’ve been a fan this long. I got this in 8th grade at Just for Feet (Used to love hooping there after school). Can’t wait for this series to begin. It’s been too long since we’ve had a team like this. #MagicTogether
Suggs is my favorite current player #MagicTogether @MagicAmbassador @OrlandoMagic
He has held the entire mental well-being of the team on his back multiple times during tough games. Only a body bag could prevent him from causing absolute defensive chaos
I have been a fan THIS long. Not many people get to meet their all-time favorite Magic player (Nick Anderson) once, let alone 25 years apart
I remember this team the super injured team omg. Everyone loves Paolo and Franz but how can your favorite player not be Suggs, he brings the energy and always plays his heart out. Also underrated Mo Wagner. He’s been here the second longest along with JI. This team can go far.
Jonathon Maldonado (@JonnyCigar407)
This season is A LONG TIME COMING!!!!! I am happy and excited as hell for this team!
@OrlandoMagic, we got your back.
I've had a love-hate relationship with the Magic. I watched them during the T-Mac/Doc Rivers era, I watched the Dwight era, the years they had Steve Francis, Cuttino Mobley, and Kelvin Cato, I sat through the Dwightmare, the Nikola era, and now today. So this year means a lot.
Mario Sánchez (@MarioSnchez92)
Amazing how this team has make us suffer for 12 years. I started to follow them in 2012, after Howard trade, when the reconstruction started. Following along different people in a forum that now I can call friends, games at 1am until 3am since we are in Spain. This is special
Everything. Its like the sun coming out after a long storm. Its completely different vibes from AG, Evan, Vuc era bc they really seems to care about each other.

I wore a T-Mac jersey to church yesterday and had an old guy ask me if I was even old enough to remember Tracy McGrady. I'm 38 years old. I starting watching when Shaq was a rookie! I haven't been this excited for the future of the franchise in at least 15 years.

Been a fan since a little kid who wasn’t old enough to understand minutes and second units and was like “Why isn’t Shaq & Penny playing the entire game???” I’ve seen many things.
It’s hard to pick anyone other than Paolo and Franz BUT………. Suggs and Mo have poured insane energy into every single game and in my opinion have been two crucial difference makers this year. Forced to choose one, I’ll take Mo Wagner as my favorite this season
I haven't seen anything like @jalensuggs in a long time, and I've been watching Orlando since 1995. I remember how intense Pietrus was for us, but nothing like Suggs and how he brings it on both ends of the court every single night

Jalen Suggs won me over time & time again this season. Franz will always be my #1 but this season specifically Mr. Suggs

Born in 1992 but my first recognition of Magic basketball was that '99 and my dad would tell me how the team sucks now because everyone left... but then came TMac.. then Steve Francis... then Dwight... then see above... it means were so back & the roller coaster continues!
Franz! I think we could make it to the 2nd round after a tough 6 game series. Paolo has to be that guy we all know he can be. Then my boy Franz can play Batman to his Superman.
GOTCHA
Thats my word... because everyone has ignored us until we got their favorite team on the ropes.
I have watched every Magic game since I got League Pass in 2008. That includes watching and rooting for some of the most depressing starting lineups in team history. The answer to all your questions: I love the Magic and have since 1989.
Orlando Magic fan since I was born in '95. This team holds a special place. It turned around a franchise that has felt cursed since the Dwight trade. Wendell not complaining last night after coming off the bench says so much about this team's culture. They all trust Mose so much.
This season means growth for us and a bright future. I feel this is the change for this franchise
Master-N Nate (@BigNate_SWAGGG)
I’ve been a hardcore Magic fan since the TMac days, went through the abysmal 2012 years when Rob Hennigan was GM and Elfrid Payton was our PG, when we drafted Mario Hezonja, and then 2020 when we lost JI, Markelle in 21, lost so many games, had so many injuries… finally, we’re back.
Fandom started with the 96-97 season. Wish Penny & the squad could have won a road game and advanced past the first round. This season has been really special to watch, bring on the Cavs!
Since 1989, a little 9 year old me was sooo happy when we got a team

Magic fan since early 90s. Penny Hardaway, Shaq, Dennis Scott, Nick Anderson. Those years were « magic ».
Been a fan since T Mac. I’ve seen the good but mostly bad. This team has been everything I thought they could be this year and more. This is just the beginning, we have such a bright future ahead of us.

DJ Da DJ (@djdadj)
Exceeded my expectations, I felt we might have been in the 7-8 play in since we narrowly missed it last year. This team has gelded and the future is bright. Definitely happy with the matchup with Cavs.
I have been a Magic fan since 1989, and this team has to be one of my top favorite teams. They play with so much heart and energy. I love it.
Been a fan since Shaq was drafted. Penny was my fav player ever. This season means a lot to me bc I have a young son who is falling in love with basketball and a big reason why are guys like Paolo and Franz just like Penny and Shaq helped me fall in love with hoops growing up
(Fan) since ‘04. Stayed through Carlos arroyo / Chris duhon / keyon dooling days, Elfrid Peyton and oladipo days, Aaron afflalo, Dwayne bacon… We are so back.
Been a fan since we got Reggie Theus & Trey Catlidge in the expansion draft!!! So excited for how good they already are & how good they could be for the next 6-7 years!! Hope the great vibes continue & that no one gets so disrespected that they want to leave

Never forget:
Belgian Magic (@Belgian_Magic)
I've lived through all of this (and the McGrady trade, the Dwightmare, the Scott Skiles fiasco, the Vogel years, missing out on Doncic...) and this season definitely ranks in my top-3. There were no real expectations an we've got a super fun group of players. Season was a dream!
Been following since 2011 so most of my Magic tenure has been pure misery. This group is such a relief and this season has been truly special, can't wait to watch us compete in the playoffs!
Magic fans from Reddit:
Lifelong magic fan. Teared up like a baby when the Tmac magic blew a 3-1 lead vs the pistons.
Mosley has gotten much better about not benching the hot hand, or putting in bums (Admiral, Okeke) at terrible times (ie: mid meltdown).
The end of season loses hurt but these youngin are gonna get a shit ton of experience in the post season regardless of how it ends. As long as we show heart vs Cleveland I’m happy with the season
It’s cool to see such young players that put the team before ego. Our scoring is so spread out and defense so hungry. Feels good man
For me it's like the " heart and hustle" only better because you knew those guys were playing at or above there talent, while this team has so many guys just starting to grow into their potential, and if they all hit their ceilings it'll be amazing
d12fsu
We haven’t had a team to be this excited about since the ‘11-‘12 season. Those 11 years is the longest stretch this franchise has gone without some kind of success and reason for optimism. It’s just nice to finally have a team and direction to look forward to for at least the next 5-7 years.
Magic fan since 1993. I don’t remember the bench/second unit ever being this good, or at least this fun to watch. The defense they play is inspiring and got me back into basketball. Favorite player is JI with Mo a close second.
Never seen a Magic coach so active. We normally get the guy who isn't ready to coach yet, or is past their prime and just old. Getting a guy who fires the team up like Mosely has been great. A total reversal from someone like Brian Hill.
There's been a huge cloud of cynicism that's washed over this franchise throughout the years, born out of bad luck. Mostly and the front office have done a great job in trying to change that conversation and steer the puppies towards success. Franchises like Orlando have been mostly thought of as a place you go to die. The team is viewed with positivity and as a breath of fresh air now.
Everything feels young. It's a good time. No expectations yet, but there is obvious talent and we're ascending. This is the sweet spot, as a fan. What I worry about is when expectations arise and how the city and fans will view someone like Mosely, buy I would hope that he gets a fairly long leash. Vocal coaches like him are great for young players but veterans may tune them out, so I also worry about what could happen next season with a potential big veteran acquisition.
Anyway, this has been one of my favorite Magix teams ever. I've loved watching them grow up. Rebuilds are painful, especially when you don't like the guys you are waiting on, but I like all of these players we have. Bamba and Bol were my last two that I disliked.
It's a good time. Enjoy the ride.
Not many coaches are able to motivate their players to play hard like this team does. Many that do (like Thibs and even SVG) often end up being somewhat resented by their players eventually. These guys love Mosley though. You see how he treats them with respect and gives them an opportunity to thrive the players reciprocate and show their commitment. I think that's special, and I hope that can last. Signing Mosley was one of the best things this FO has done for the rebuild.
I’ve been a fan since 94-95, Shaq and Penny era.
This season has been very special, especially after the drought of at least 14 years since we’ve had a team this good, that we can be this proud of. Locking up the 5 seed Sunday night made me feel like Andy Dufresne emerging from the sewage tunnel out of Shawshank. This is easily the most proud I’ve been to wear my Magic gear in public in over a decade.
When you think of historically great Magic teams, you may often think of defense, but typically interior-centric defensive squads such as those led by Shaq or Dwight. The perimeter defense the team plays under Mosley with the personnel on this roster has been a spectacle and a real joy to watch this year and quite a bit different in some ways than what we’ve seen in the past.
My favorite player is Banchero. Tough to not choose our budding Superstar, we haven’t had one in a while. Suggs is a close second.
The word I’d choose to describe the team is tenacious.
It’s just so damn nice to have things done the right way. No shortcuts, no quick fixes we legit could be in the mix for 7+more years with the core we have built. We have all of our picks everyone is on good contracts. As long as our main guys stay healthy we are gonna be competitive for a while. This is just the beginning
This Magic season means so much, almost as much as any season. That’s due to the tough seasons we’ve had to go through over the past 10+ years.
It’s also equally due to the players we have and coach Mose. He brings positivity and togetherness. He also is a great defensive coach. The standard is possibly the best all-around defensively that we’ve ever seen here.
Favorite player has to Paolo because he’s so impactful and can put the team on his back when needed. Really haven’t seen that since T-Mac. Franz and Jalen are also top 3 for me. All 3 have shown a lot of versatility and growth in their first 2-3 seasons.
I first became a Magic fan as a little kid when Shaq and Penny were around. They were larger than life! Then as a teenager, T-Mac was when I learned to love basketball. I practiced his turn around jumper for hours and hours.
This team is the best foundation we’ve ever had to winning a championship.
I went to more games this season than I have total since the Dwight Howard days
Fan since 1993 from Australia. This season feels like its up there with the great seasons we've had in the past and for the first time since Dwight had moved on, the team has made actual progress instead of just treading water and making up numbers.
Coach Mose has fostered a great sense of team comradery, and this team has a lot more steel about compared to some of our teams in the past. The running out of steam towards the end of the season is a bit disappointing but considering how young the team is, it's not surprising, and they'll get better as they get more games and experience.
Im going to be different from some of our fans, but unsurprisingly as an Aussie, Joe Ingles is my favourite player on this team. When he was signed, I knew that he was going to play the same role that he does for the Australian national team and be a wise mentor and experienced hand that looks after our young players. I still remember the downvotes when I posted on this subreddit when he was signed, but he's performed his role to perfection as the leader of the bench, and he has no ego about the role he performs.
For the first time in a long time, it feels like the front office knows what it's doing, and this is reflected in the team. Im looking forward to see how this team goes in the next few years.
Life long Magic fan. I was beyond excited that Orlando was getting an NBA. I never thought we would go this long without winning a championship.
The Shaq and Penny era was the most exciting time for us. We were a very small market and our team was dominating. Games were packed and it was the place to be in Orlando at the time.
I think this season means so much. We have a group of young players and a coach that is 100% committed to getting better everyday. They seem very focused and hardworking. They want it bad and it shows. At the rate that they are improving, high level success may be sooner than we realize.
This core group will raise a championship banner in Orlando and this city is long overdue for one.
Go Magic!
I have been a Magic fan since their inception, attended too many games to list them all, but a few highlights include our first regular season win against the Knicks in November of '89, Skiles setting the assist record against the Nuggets in December of '90, Nick stealing the ball against MJ and the Bulls in '95, and then bricking the 4 free throws against the Rockets later in that same playoff run. So many others as well.
This team, for me, exemplifies everything about a teamsport I love. The teamwork, the chemistry, the athleticism, the hustle, the never say die attitude, you can see all of that and more in this squad. Coach Mosley has them playing with a fire and a joy rarely seen in the last decade or so.
I was at the game on Sunday, and my wife and I will be in our seats for the first home playoff game in 5 years! This past season has brought so much pleasure to this longtime fan, and the way the Front Office has assembled this team has me believing we are on the cusp of something truly extraordinary. I hesitate to express this sentiment, not wanting to jinx us, but to me this team has a 2014 Warriors vibe, with greatness right around the corner!
Obviously Paolo is at the front and center of what is happening, but all of this team has contributed mightily. My favorites are Jalen, JI, Moe and Markelle. Not all will be back next year, but just like Vooch and AG, they will always hold a place in my heart.
If the basketball Gods favor the teams that respect the game, we will beat Cleveland. What the Cavaliers did on Sunday was reprehensible, throwing the 4th quarter, and thus the game, against Charlotte so they wouldn't have to face Philadelphia or Miami. They are cowards and shouldn't be rewarded for their timidity.
Whether we beat Cleveland or not, it won't change the pride I feel for this team. How great it was to experience that feeling again, and how much anticipation I have for the future of this team.
I guess the new tag line is 'Everybody In!' But I still keep it simple: GO MAGIC!!!
Lifelong fan. So many downs that the few ups felt like they were EVERYTHING. Worked concessions at the Arena from 2012-2014. Many, MANY good memories from my time there.. but I also remember the sad looks on the kids' faces. Night in, night out. Pure Tragic ™️
This season doesn't feel any better or worse than 1995/2001/2009, but I'm very excited and not cynical, whatsoever.
There's still room for improvement obviously and think this playoff run is going to be good in a multitude of ways because it does a few things
It gives players especially the young set that playoff experience and what is expected when they get there
It gives Orlando a platform to let the rest of the league know that there still here and striving for success
And gives coach mose and the player a true test of strength
Other than that absolutely happy for these guys and hoping for a big time win from them in the playoff
YEAR OF THE DRAGON
This is a special season for Magic fans and a big step in building Orlando’s culture.
